Message From the President

Having raced bikes for more than 20 years, cycling is very important to me. But I have also learned (the hard way at times) that cycling as a sport and an activity can be dangerous.

While serving as the President of DC Velo (a DC based cycling team), I wished good luck to our teammate, Carl Dolan, who was getting ready to start the 1999 Church Creek (MD) time trial. Carl never finished and died tragically of heat exhaustion. Under the DC Velo team banner, the team raised money in past years to help pay college tuition for Carl's three (3) sons. Those efforts were successful. The DC Velo Outreach Foundation grew and evolved out of those charitable efforts and the desire to give back in some way for all of the great things cycling has provided us.

Correctly fitted helmet use is also important to me having cracked at least four (4) myself and managing to survive (at least on some level). I keep one of these cracked helmets in my office just to show friends why they should wear one on all of their rides.

So out of DC Velo's prior club commitment to charitable community work, and my interest in promoting cycling safety, we have formed the DC Velo Outreach Foundation to be a 501c(3) charitable organization. We plan to start out small with our primary focus on cycling safety, particularly kid's bicycle safety so they start out cycling with the solid safety base. We will also focus on other charitable causes related to cycling.

So that's it for now. We hope to keep everyone up-to-date on our planned activities so check back soon.

John Epting
President
